The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officer in Kisumu over allegations of soliciting a bribe to help a company clear millions of shillings in tax arrears.
The suspect, identified as Hughes Obilo, is an officer attached to KRA’s Debt Refunds Department in Kisumu.
According to the EACC, Obilo allegedly demanded Sh100,000 from a construction company in exchange for facilitating the removal of tax arrears amounting to about Sh4.5 million from the iTax system and helping the company obtain a Tax Compliance Certificate.
Investigators launched an operation after receiving information about the alleged bribery scheme.
The operation resulted in Obilo’s arrest on September 14, 2026, as he allegedly received Sh30,000 from the company.
He was subsequently taken to Kisumu Central Police Station, where he was booked pending further processing and the recording of statements.
The EACC said the arrest forms part of its efforts to tackle corruption and bribery in government institutions, particularly where public officers interact directly with members of the public.
The commission warned that it would continue pursuing public officials suspected of using their positions to obtain personal benefits.
