The High Court has convicted four men over the 2015 murder of former Kabete Member of Parliament George Muchai and three members of his security team, bringing a major development in a case that has remained before the courts for more than a decade. Following the convictions, Justice Kanyi Kimondo revoked the suspects bond terms awaiting their sentencing.
Muchai, who was serving as the Kabete Member of Parliament at the time, was killed alongside his bodyguards in an incident that shocked the country. The prosecution had presented evidence linking the accused to the violent robbery and the subsequent killings. The defence had opposed the prosecution’s case during the trial.
In delivering its decision, the High Court found that the prosecution had proved the charges against the accused to the required standard.
Muchai was shot dead in the early hours of February 7, 2015, in Nairobi, while travelling along Kenyatta Avenue. He was in the company of his two police bodyguards, Constables Samuel Kimathi Kailikia and Samuel Lekakeny Matanta, as well as his driver, Stephen Ituu Wambugu. All four were killed in the attack.
The former MP had been returning from a family function when the vehicle he was travelling in was attacked. Contemporary reports said the assailants targeted the occupants in what investigators treated as a robbery, firearms and other items were taken during the incident.
