A man has been arrested in Nairobi over allegations that he spent more than Sh6.7 million that was mistakenly transferred to his bank account during a company’s electronic payment process. Dickson Yiaile Sitei was apprehended by detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit on Saturday, October 24, 2026, along Lantana Road in Westlands.
Investigations indicate that the disputed transaction occurred on November 18, 2025, when a company was processing 74 electronic payments.
Among the transactions was a rent payment of Sh72,000 owed to Sitei for the company’s shop in Suswa. However, a processing error allegedly resulted in an additional Sh6,744,354, intended for a different company, being deposited into his account. According to investigators, the company later sought to recover the money after discovering the error. Sitei is accused of spending the funds instead of returning the excess amount.
The matter was investigated before the case file was forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review.
Following its assessment, the ODPP directed that Sitei face charges of intentionally withholding an erroneously delivered payment under Section 35 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, and money laundering under Section 3(b)(1), read together with Section 16(1)(a), of the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
Sitei remains in custody as police complete the necessary processing ahead of his arraignment in court.
