A Somali national has been fined a total of Sh370,000 after admitting to illegally staying in Kenya and using false information to obtain Kenyan identification documents and a passport.
Mohamud Mohammed Roble was convicted at the JKIA Law Courts after pleading guilty to three charges linked to his unlawful presence in the country and the fraudulent acquisition of Kenyan documents.
The case was taken over by detectives from the Immigration and Citizen Services Investigations unit after Roble was arrested by immigration officials at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Investigations revealed that Roble had obtained Kenyan registration documents using false declarations before securing a Kenyan passport.
Following his guilty plea, the court imposed a fine of Sh150,000 for being unlawfully present in Kenya, another Sh150,000 for making a false declaration to obtain a Kenyan passport, and Sh70,000 for knowingly presenting an identity card containing false information with the intention to deceive.
The court ordered that Roble serve the respective prison terms provided by law if he fails to pay the fines. It further directed that he be repatriated to Somalia after settling the fines.
The court also ordered the fraudulent Kenyan passport to be handed over to the Director General of Immigration Services for destruction.
