In today’s court news, a magistrate’s court has granted anticipatory bail of KSh 10,000 each to four filmmakers involved in the BBC documentary Blood Parliament.
The filmmakers approached the court to seek protection from potential arrest, alleging police harassment and unlawful confiscation of their equipment.
Their legal team, led by Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, argued that police officers had seized critical recording and storage devices during the arrest, devices believed to hold sensitive material under investigation. The defense further claimed the journalists did not give consent for the seizure of their equipment.
Appearing before Magistrate Erick Wambo, the lawyers requested the court to prevent any further arrests or intimidation by law enforcement. They maintained that the authorities already possessed all the materials taken during the May 2, 2024 operation and should rely solely on that.
The four; Nicholas Gichuki, Brian Adagala, MarkDenver Karubiu, and Chris Wamae were arrested at their Karen-based studio and detained overnight at Pangani and Muthaiga police stations.
