A forensic expert has told the court that video footage presented as evidence in the case concerning the death of Rex Masai showed no signs of alteration, deletion, duplication, splicing or rearrangement.
The expert testified that on July 31, 2026, he received a silver 8GB USB flash drive labelled JO at the forensic laboratory, accompanied by an exhibit memo from investigator Justin Nyatete.
He told the court that his mandate was to establish the authenticity of the footage, certify it in accordance with the Evidence Act and provide any other relevant information arising from the examination.
Upon previewing the contents of the flash drive, the expert confirmed that it contained a video file named 191802.mp4. The footage was subjected to forensic examination using the Cognitech Forensic Video Investigator, a forensic video analysis tool installed on a desktop computer. The examination established that the footage was internally consistent with respect to its observed temporal sequence and visual continuity.
The expert said the video was recorded on June 20, 2024, commencing at approximately 7:18pm. The file had a size of 182 megabytes and a duration of one minute and 15 seconds. He further told the court that there were no technical indications of intentional alteration, deletion, duplication, splicing or rearrangement of the video content during the examination.
Following the examination, the expert prepared and signed a certificate dated July 31, 2026, confirming the authenticity of the footage. He also certified that the footage had not been modified, altered or otherwise interfered with during the handling process.
According to the certificate, the footage was examined as part of investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of Rex Masai on June 20, 2024, within Nairobi’s Central Business District.
