The Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi have granted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) permission to detain a nanny from Nyamira County for seven days, pending investigations into allegations of child theft.
The suspect, Catherine Kerubo Masi, was arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Joseph Karanja on suspicion of abducting her employer’s two-day-old infant. According to the prosecution, Kerubo allegedly vanished with the newborn on June 6, 2025.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was later traced and arrested in Nyali Sub-county, Mombasa County, following intelligence reports.
The prosecution requested a 10-day detention period to allow investigators time to record statements from key witnesses and gather evidence from the hospital where the baby was delivered. Authorities also told the court they needed additional time to search the suspect’s rural home in Nyamira County, where the infant is believed to be located.
After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defense, the court approved a seven-day detention to allow further investigations.
