Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has expressed his willingness to appear in court today in a bid to prevent his six-month prison sentence from taking effect tomorrow.
Through his lawyers, Cecil Miller and Steve Ogolla, Masengeli informed the court that he is prepared to present himself on Thursday. Miller initially told Justice Chacha Mwita that the IG would be available between 12 noon and 2 p.m.
However, shortly afterward, Ogolla notified the court that he had received a message from Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, indicating that the IG would be produced at 3:30 p.m.
The legal team requested that Justice Mwita refer their case to Judge Lawrence Mugambi, so they could present Masengeli in court today before the sentence takes effect. However, Justice Mwita explained that Judge Mugambi was currently engaged in a bench hearing and might not be available.
As a result, the judge directed that the matter be mentioned before Justice Mugambi tomorrow for further directions.
Last Friday, Justice Mugambi sentenced Masengeli to six months in jail for contempt of court after he failed to appear and explain the disappearance of three Kenyans who were allegedly abducted in Kitengela. However, the judge suspended the sentence for seven days to give Masengeli an opportunity to comply by appearing before the court.
