The sister of Yassin Moyo, a teenager fatally shot while standing on his family’s balcony during the enforcement of the COVID-19 curfew, gave an emotional testimony in court, recounting her brother’s tragic final moments.

Yassin was allegedly killed by police officer Duncan Ndiema, who now faces murder charges for the incident that occurred on March 30, 2020.

Tearfully addressing the court, Yassin’s sister described the heartbreaking night, recalling that the family was together when the bullet struck her brother. With tears streaming down her face, she told Justice Lilian Mutende that the tragedy unfolded after Yassin was sent by their mother to retrieve a phone charging on the first floor of their home.

She explained that when Yassin returned with the phone, he mentioned hearing commotion outside. Curious, the entire family, including their mother, went to the upstairs balcony to observe what was happening. From there, they saw a group of people—some in police uniforms, others in civilian clothing—approaching their house.

According to her testimony, the group split into different directions, but one man wearing a long trench coat walked directly towards their home. She recounted that, moments later, the man stood about 15 meters away. While they were uncertain of his intentions, a few minutes later, she heard a loud bang and realized Yassin had been shot.

“Then my mom told us to lie down. Immediately, Yassin said he had been hit,” she recalled. “My older sister removed his shirt, and that’s when she told us that Yassin had been shot.”

As panic set in, Yassin’s sister described how they rushed him downstairs, all while he struggled to breathe. “He kept saying, ‘I can’t breathe, please help me,’” she said.

Yassin was rushed to the hospital, but despite their desperate efforts, he was pronounced dead at 2 a.m.

The case against Officer Ndiema continues as the family seeks justice for Yassin, whose life was tragically cut short during the pandemic curfew enforcement.
