In today’s court news, Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado who is on trial for the murder of his mistress Sharon Otieno and her unborn baby has said he did not end his relationship with her because her pregnancy as has been widely claimed.

Obado who is testifying in his defense told the judge that he reason he decided to call it quits with Sharon was more because of the inconsistencies from her and not her pregnancy.

While being led by his lawyer Sagana, obado said his affair had already ended by the time it became public knowledge but it became widely known only after Sharon began discussing it openly.

“It only came to light after we had already broken up. In my view, it became an open secret when the late Sharon started talking about it,” he said.

He also said that he very ok with Sharon having his child and had no issue with the pregnancy when she informed him that she was carrying his child.

Obado said that despite ending the relationship in February or March of 2018, he continued to provide financial support to Sharon until her death.

He said he had supported her business ventures before their breakup and helped cover her medical expenses during her pregnancy by paying for insurance.

Obado also mentioned that the lead investigator, Nicholas Ole Sena, confirmed he had continued to support Sharon directly until another individual, the late Mula, became involved.

“My lady, I was initially helping her grow her business. After the breakup, the support reduced to basic upkeep. However, I still had plans to buy land and build her a house,” he said.

He explained that the idea of building a house was to provide Sharon with a stable home for the sake of their unborn child, reflecting his intention to act responsibly.

“As we waited for the house to be constructed, she proposed moving from her mother’s house to a rented place in Homa Bay town, which I agreed to,” Obado said.

Although Sharon expressed interest in a more upscale home in Nairobi or Kisumu, Obado felt he could only afford to build her a house in Homa Bay adding that Sharon initially resisted the idea, but was eventually persuaded by Mula to accept it.

The court also heard that on August 17, 2018, Sharon had messaged Obado, thanking him for sending her Ksh100,000.

“I got the Ksh100,000 you sent me. We will arrange how to pay the house tomorrow,” Obado read from the message.

The defense hearing for Obado’s co-accused, Michael Oyamo and Casper Obiero, is scheduled to continue from May 19 to May 23, 2025
