Detectives have arrested a third suspect in connection with the armed robbery of Sh1 million along the Shamakhokho–Serem road, in which a woman was targeted after withdrawing money from a bank in Mbale.
Sammy Angwegwe, 36, was arrested in the Esirulo area of Emuhaya during an intelligence-led operation involving detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), Western Region, officers from Embali Police Station and investigators from DCI Hamisi.
The robbery took place on October 19, 2026. The victim and a friend had withdrawn the money, which was meant to buy building materials, and placed it in a shopping bag before travelling home. The two women boarded a matatu and alighted at Shamakhokho stage, where they hired a motorcycle to take them to Chemobo Village in Nandi County.
As they neared Erusui Girls School, a white Toyota Probox reportedly blocked their way. Four men emerged from the vehicle, two of them armed with pistols, and took the bag containing the cash. They also stole another bag carrying the victim’s identification documents, bank card and mobile phone before fleeing towards Serem.
Detectives launched investigations after the incident, and the latest arrest brings the number of suspects in custody to three. Police believe the men were involved in the robbery, while investigations continue.
