A Nairobi court has formally charged Ezekiel Kyama Nzyoki, popularly known online as the “Mr Speaker Sir” man, over his alleged involvement in the June 25, 2024 invasion of Parliament Buildings during the anti-Finance Bill protests.

Nzyoki appeared before the court to answer two criminal charges arising from the breach of Parliament during the demonstrations that swept across the country. The first count accuses him of entering the Parliamentary precincts without lawful authority, an offence under the Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Act.

He is also charged with malicious damage to property contrary to Section 339(1) of the Penal Code. Prosecutors allege that Nzyoki, jointly with other individuals who have not yet been arraigned, intentionally destroyed property belonging to the Parliamentary Service Commission.

According to the charge sheet, the damaged items include sections of the Parliament perimeter fence, the mausoleum flagpole, office furniture, ICT equipment, television screens, kitchen appliances, motor vehicles and electrical installations. The prosecution estimates the value of the damaged property at KSh41,248,570.

The charges stem from the dramatic events of June 25, 2024, when protesters opposed to the Finance Bill breached Parliament Buildings, resulting in extensive destruction and prompting a major security crackdown.

The matter is now before the Nairobi court, where Nzyoki is expected to take plea and the criminal proceedings will continue.
