Bellarmine Mugabe, the youngest son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Mugabe, has been arrested alongside four other men over an alleged assault in Harare, as authorities investigate the suspected smuggling of two luxury vehicles into the country.
The 29-year-old was among five suspects taken into custody on Tuesday, according to police. The arrests are linked to an incident at Brompton Guest Lodge in Harare on November 3. Police said the alleged assault occurred at approximately 6:30pm local time.
The other suspects arrested are Munashe Mubawu, 43, Terrence Johannes Chinyemba, 42, Fredson Peter, 33, and Solomon Pamire, 34.
The arrests come amid an investigation into the alleged illegal importation of two vehicles into Zimbabwe. Local media reports indicate that the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has seized the vehicles as part of the inquiry. Authorities have not publicly detailed the alleged roles of the five suspects in the suspected smuggling operation.
Bellarmine is the youngest son of Robert Mugabe and his second wife, Grace Mugabe. His father governed Zimbabwe for 37 years before being removed from power in 2017, aged 93. Robert Mugabe died in 2019.
