On Wednesday, controversial businessman Bryan Yongo was arraigned before a Nairobi court, facing charges of masquerading as a lawyer, among other fraud-related offenses.
The charges allege that Yongo, in collaboration with Joseph Bondo Otumba, conspired to obtain KES 2.1 million from Joyce Cherotich Rono by false pretenses between February 9 and 26, 2021. The duo purportedly promised to transfer two motor vehicles to Rono as security, a commitment they failed to fulfill.
Additionally, Yongo is accused of forging a demand letter, purportedly drawn and signed by A. Kwengu, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, knowing this to be false. He faces further charges for fraudulently obtaining one table, three chairs, and an iMac 27 desktop, all valued at KES 220,000, from Joyce Rono.
In another charge, Yongo is accused of pretending to be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Allegedly, he acted on behalf of Joyce Rono to demand an outstanding debt of KES 62.2 million from Abdikahinya Noor Maalim, despite being unqualified to do so.
Yongo denied all charges before Hon. R.M. Ndombi and requested the court to release him on reasonable bail terms. The court granted his request, setting bail at KES 1 million bond or an alternative cash bail of KES 500,000.
