Five prison officers charged in connection to 301 M graft case

Five prison officers were on Monday charged before a Milimani court in relation to the Sh 301 fraud case where it’s alleged that they got paid for supplying ‘air’ to the prisons.

Last week eight other prison officers were charged with the same offense and released on bail.

Benjamin Obuya Njoga, a senior prison service officer, was charged alongside four others persons with various charges of fraud.

It is alleged that the Prisons senior officer conspired to commit corruption and other economic crimes on diverse dates between July 1, 2014 and March 29, 2018.

It was further alleged that they fraudulently acquired Sh301 million being payment for goods not supplied to the State Department of Correctional Services.

Njoga was separately charged that on August 29, 2016, used his office to improperly confer a benefit of Sh72 million to three firms being payment for goods not supplied to the State Department for Correctional Services.

It was also alleged that Joseph Kamau Mwangi fraudulently acquired Sh 21 M from the State Department for Correctional Services, for goods not supplied.

They denied the charges and pleaded with the court to grant them reasonable bail terms.

They were released on Sh 7 million bond with an alternative cash bail of Sh 4 million each.
