A Nairobi court has granted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations 14 days to detain police inspector Kenneth Kipkeboi Sang as investigators pursue inquiries into the murders of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso and city lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu.
Sang was arrested in Eldoret following an intelligence-led operation and transferred to Nairobi. Investigators told the court that the additional detention period would allow them to interrogate him, record his statement, conduct searches and pursue possible recoveries before charging him.
The investigating officer said forensic examinations had linked cartridge cases and a bullet head recovered during investigations to a Mini Jericho pistol bearing serial number 47302127. The firearm was reportedly issued to Sang, making him a key suspect in the investigations.
According to the investigators, Sang is suspected of having been involved in planning the attack. The DCI further told the court that some suspected accomplices had already been charged before the Milimani High Court over Dr Mutiso’s murder, while other suspects remained at large.
In a separate investigation, the DCI alleged that Sang played a significant role in the killing of lawyer Mbobu, who was murdered on September 9, 2025. Investigators described him as a suspected planner in the killing, adding that alleged accomplices had already been charged before the Kibera High Court.
The prosecution opposed his release, describing him as a flight risk. Investigators alleged that he deserted his workstation and went into hiding before being traced and arrested in Eldoret.
The DCI also asked the court to authorise Sang’s transfer to hospital for a mental assessment ahead of his anticipated plea-taking in the High Court.
The 14-day detention period is intended to allow investigators to complete outstanding inquiries into both murders and prepare the suspect for possible charges.
