The late legislator’s widow, Margaret Korir, told the court that just ten minutes before her husband was fatally shot, he sent her KSh 5,200 via M-Pesa. Korir testified that the money was sent at exactly 7:30 p.m. After receiving it, she drove for about ten minutes to a petrol station before deciding to call her husband at around 7:40 p.m. Instead of Were answering the phone, his bodyguard picked the call while crying.

She told the court that she immediately ended the call, sensing that something was wrong. Moments later, her son telephoned her with the devastating news that the former MP had been shot.

The couple’s son, Boyd Were, also testified before the court, revealing that he had previously advised his father to change his daily routine after receiving persistent threats to his life. He said he was the one who suggested that his father use his son’s vehicle instead of his usual car, believing it would enhance his security.

Tragically, Boyd told the court, his father was murdered while travelling in that very vehicle.

Ong’ondo Were was shot dead on April 30, 2025, at a roundabout near the Nairobi City Mortuary in what investigators believe was a carefully planned attack.

Following investigations, five suspects were arrested and charged with his murder. They are the MP’s bodyguard Allan Omondi Ogolla, William Imoli Shighali, who prosecutors allege was the gunman, Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, Ebel Ochieng’, and Isaac Kura.

All five accused persons have denied the murder charges and remain in custody as the trial continues.

The case is scheduled to resume on October 21, 2026, when the prosecution is expected to continue presenting its witnesses.
